PNEUMATOPHORS: BREATHING ROOTS
PNEUMATOPHORS
2017

Aerial roots specialized for gaseous exchange. Not only interesting in shape and form which grabbed by interest, but it also provides most of the mangrove environmental value. According to EAD “Mangroves roots aerial air-breathing roots transport air and provide reservoir of oxygen during high tide when all the aerial roots are underwater. Not only do they support the mangrove survival but it positively contributes to the whole ecosystem. Crabs and sea snails climb up those aerial roots at high tides to avoid aquatic predators. The roots provide a surface for all kinds of creatures from algae to shellfish. The tangle of roots also provide hiding places for young fishes and shrimps from larger predators. Their branches provide shelter and nesting sites for large herons, and crevices for insects and other tiny creatures”.

PNEUMATOPHORS – Breathing Roots is a series of large format photographic screen printing on canvas images expressing a metaphor of our visionary leader, our founding father Sheikh Zayed Bin Sultan Al Nahyan setting the roots of our developing civilization; here showcased in the minimalism form of a root that serves as a survival base of a whole ecosystem.
